Instant Inheritance

Sunset can now pull a deceased account holder’s bank balance straight into the case’s FDIC-insured estate account, without corresponding with the bank at all. Approved transfers settle in a few business days instead of the weeks or months a bank estate department takes.New endpoints, live September 1, 2026:
  • GET /cases/{case_id}/transfers — every transfer on a case.
  • POST /cases/{case_id}/transfers — request a transfer from an eligible account.
  • GET /cases/{case_id}/transfers/{transfer_id} — track one transfer.
  • POST /cases/{case_id}/transfers/{transfer_id}/cancel — cancel before submission.
Existing resources gain an instant_inheritance summary on bank accounts, carrying an eligibility of eligible or ineligible, and a new instant_inheritance value on closure_method. Accounts that do not qualify are unaffected and continue through Automated Closure.See the Instant Inheritance Guide.

Automated Closure

Sunset now closes accounts on your behalf: institution notification, documentation, follow-up, signature flagging, and deposit of proceeds into the case’s FDIC-insured estate account. Free for families, covering bank, retirement, and brokerage accounts plus life insurance claims. In development

  • Closure-request endpoints — request and track automated closures programmatically.
  • Search initiation endpoint — kick off asset searches over the API.
  • Business bank account search — a new search type finding accounts titled to the deceased’s business entities.
Documentation for each will land here when the endpoints ship.
